What educational "type" toys do you recommend for a 1 year old???

My daughter turns 1 in 2 months (OMG thats scary when i write it down) and she has TONS of toy but i want to get her something to help develop her mind, whether it be creativly or otherwise what do you recommend?

I would suggest any of the Leap Frog learning toys. They have so many and my oldest just loves them. We have the refrigerator magnets, the ABC catapilliar and the jukebox. They all play songs and he just loves to dance to the music. They will also help her with learning her letters & colors.

I loved likin logs, building blocks, coloring books, being read to, just give her simple basic toys that are fun...... i have played with them since i could remeber, and still do. They are great for the imgination. Actually, my neighbor when I was 7 built me the most basci of basic doll houses, and I loved it. I used it until I was 12. It had nothing but walls, and was perfect.

Building blocks are great.  Also, shape sorters and if you're brave enough play dough and finger paints.

Baby Einstein(sp?) toys are superb because they make them for ALL ages!

Leap Frog even has toys for babies aged 1 and up

Building Blocks(they come in foam also) are really good to get her for hand and ey coordination and what not

You can even find store brand toys that do the same as these name brand toys.

V-tech Smile Baby systems are also pretty great my 1 yr old LOVES hers. All you do is set it up to your DVD player or TV pop in the DVD(if dvd ready) and they do the rest with the little controller(its about the size of a small printer or slightly smaller and has colors on it for them to press on)

Get her something with colors and stuff...like things that catch her attention well....I seriously forget what they are called but they have the lines that have little shapes on them and the child pushes them back and forth...those are realy good for this age seeing as it enhances hand and eye coordination...they even make some with other activities on them...they are really nifty and age appropriate for a 1 yr old.

Honestly, the best toys are SIMPLE: dolls, balls, blocks, puzzles, music, toys that she can push, those toys with shape sorters, instruments etc. They'll help her develop her motor skills and most importantly, her imagination.

These new electronic toys aren't as educational as they may seem. They may sing the alphabet or speak spanish, but your child isn't really benefiting all that much from it, for she is only using one of her senses (usually hearing) from playing with it, which means it'll take longer for her to learn in information.

Just remember toys are expensive and simple things are still enjoyable. I would suggest sensory items for her to explore such as books as they are a great early literacy experience which you could share with your child together!

Creativity allows your child to manipulate different forms of media, express their creativity and imagination and use their sensory skills. Lots and lots of play dough and finger paints. To make it a memorable experience you could by a cheap photo frame and put up some of her art work even her hand prints to remember her 1st Birthday.

Books.......bright, colorful books. Tons of them!

If you can get your daughter to enjoy looking through and reading books with you, she will develop a lifelong love for books and literature. The simplest books, books with tabs that open to surprises, short stories at bedtime ("Good Night Moon"), books with short rhymes, ANY book..........you will giving your daughter the greatest learning tool ever!

I reccomend the wooden puzzles with animals, letters or numbers.

It may not sound like a great gift, but my daughter loves them only second to her books.

She is now 2 and 1/2, but she has loved both those more than toys oddly enough!

I think it teaches them, and also sharpens their minds to fit the pieces where they go.

Anything Leapfrog is great! They have lots of toys for each age and my kids have benefitted from them tremendously.
