  1. A huge effect.  Cyanobactieria were the first to produce oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis in the Archaen and Proterozoic.  The composition of the atmosphere then was far different than it is today, and was not suitable for life.  Cyanobacteria made oxygen based life possible.
