What effect has rejection had upon society and humanity?

What do you all think? This can range from prejudice that has stopped discoveries from every getting anywhere until recently, to people ridiculing those who used math to say the Earth was not indeed the center of the universe in the 14/1500s. Thanks guys, this is for my politics/discussion class.

it's kept the middle east in the middle ages and created terrorists who have a need to get their way.
