  4. well, if cathode rays within a vacuum, hit a phosphorous-covered plate of glass, the phosphors would glow.  if you manipulate the cathode ray into a beam, you can cause different areas to briefly glow at command.  and if you cause the cathode ray to create a pattern on the plate, using electro-magnets to direct the "stream", then the result is the basis for something we call television.  (The type with the big glass picture tube, that is.)
