  1.  guest 929 do not forget that in 1959 there was NO POWER GRID. Just the telepgraph, which was utterly destroyed.

  2. Read "Solar Flare" by Larry Burkett.  It is factual and has a very good scenario for what would happen.  It would basically wipe out all electronic and electrical item in operation at the time.

  3. Imagine, that the effect will burn all power grids. What then? No food, no water, no transport, no gas, no food production - effect? Immediate cannibalism and the end of the civilisation.  Why? Because the power grids will be destroyed, similarly to the magnetic impulse generated by an atomic bomb.
    The good thing is that the flare can go in another direction from the sun.
