  1. It depends on how severe the eruption is. It can have drastic

    consequences on the climate.

  2. they can cause widespread changes to the earth.

the saying "go west" comes from i think an eruption in about 1816 which caused an extended winter to occur.  millions of cubic metres of pulverised rock was blasted into the atmosphere, causing the suns energy to be blocked from the surface of the earth, this cooled the temperature to such a degree that crops failed from the lack of sunlight.  also the term "dark ages" used to describe 1400's - 1600ad is often believed to be attributed to colder temperautres and climate from volcanic activity

  3. A volcano can release thousands to millions of tons of gas and that makes Al Gore cry.

One good volcano can do more harm to the environment than all of mankind's pollution.

  4. The biggest effect that you notice after an eruption is the ash everywhere.  When the volcano blows it spews ash into the atmosphere blocking out the sun.  That ash comes down on the wildlife and landscape covering it.  This ash does not move.  When it starts to rain the ash will just turn to mud.  It is sufficating to plants and animals alike.

  5. Mostly just local effects due to ash or lava in the immediate area.

Volcanoes emit far less greenhouse gas than man (details below) and what they emit is more than cancelled out by the dust they also emit.

So volcanoes have very little effect on global warming, which is mostly caused by us.
