  1. If you're running copper it depends on which way your supply line is going.  If it's vertical you'd want to sweat a drop eared el onto your pipe cut at your desired height.  A drop eared el is a 90 made of brass and lets you transition from pipe to  threads. To secure it, it has a couple of "wings" with pre-drilled holes already in place. s***w them tight to the house with a couple of stainless screws.  s***w in your valve.

If the supply is running horizontally, (perhaps coming from the basement) you'd want to use a sillcock.  It's a valve about 12" in length.  Its seat or 0-ring is located at the inlet side of the valve.  The sillcock helps prevent freezing of your water lines with the seat/0-ring located inside your warm basement.  It also attaches to your house with stainless screws.
