  1. Every guitarist has his or her own ideas about what makes the perfect guitar.   There is no one guitar that everyone can agree is "the best".

The only way to know which is the best guitar for YOU, for your music, that sounds best to your ears and feels and plays most comfortable in your hands, is to go to a well-stocked, reputable guitar shop and try out as many different instruments as you can.  Forget about brand names and prices, just play 'em all and find the one that YOU like best.

  2. Here's the same answer i've given to others (it's a common question):

Different styles of electric guitars have different sounds and different feels. Certain types you'll see used heavily in particular types of music (ex, archtops in jazz, 24 fret thin necks with heavy humbuckers in meta;, etc).

I recommend sticking with a good, versatile middle-of-the-road electric guitar as a starter. Something that will sound great in jazz, country, blues, rock, and metal alike.

I'll lay out three levels of versatile electric guitars that are good for beginners. from least to most expensive:

The absolute best electric guitar for a beginner is one you can get for free. ;) If you know somebody who can lend you one they don't use often, that's your best bet. A LOT of people begin playing but don't continue, and end up wasting a lot of money.

Next, you should consider one of: Squire strat, Epiphone Les Paul Special II, Epiphone SG Special, Ibanez IJX30, Ibanez IJX121. All of these can be gotten in "starter packs" that include an amp and some other goodies ranging from $199-$299, or $100-200 by themselves.

You can find them even cheaper and in abundance on Craigslist.org.

If, and only if you're certain you will continue to play, here are some recommendations that you won't outgrow as quickly: Fender stratocaster (Made-in-Mexico), Epiphone Les Paul standard, Epiphone SG, Ibanez RG2EX1, Jackson DXMG Dinky. They range from $250-450.

Obviously there are other options that will meet your criteria, but those listed above are very good, popular, and common picks for beginners.

** Edit ** Also, I'll second the recommendation to go to a guitar store and try out various models. Only you can feel and hear which is best for you.

But Andrew.... recommending PRSs and Gibsons to a beginner!?  I can barely even justify a $2000+ guitar, and I've been playing 20 years.

  3. Honestly, You should play the one that you like the best.  If there's a Guitar Center in your area, just go and play everything!  It also depends on how much you want to spend on your git-fiddle.  That makes a huge difference as well.  Your question is kinda like saying, "What make of car is best?"; you're gonna get lots of opinions. But, just to point you in a general direction:

Gibson Les Pauls.  You can spend anywhere from $1200 to $5000 and beyond. Epiphone makes the lower-end Gibsons. Lots of different style bands play L.P.s If you have lots of money to burn, you can buy one of the new "Self-tuning" Les Pauls, check out the Gibson website for more info.

Gibson SG's.  Around the same price range, also with Epiphone making the lower end ones. Very versatile as well.  I'm partial to this body style, but that's just me.

Paul Reed Smith's-  These are also beautiful guitars, some have little bird inlays. Anywbere from 2000 bones and way beyond.

That's a good jumping off point, I think.  Good luck!!

  4. IMO the best brands are Fender and Gibson/Epiphone. Epiphones are a cheaper version of the gibson models but are very close in tone. I personally like fender better than gibson just because I like to play blues, jazz, and a little bit of classic rock. I think the Fender Telecaster is the most versatile guitar on the market. Fenders run anywhere from $400 to $5000. I think that the American Standards of the fender telecasters and stratocasters are the best to buy for value and tone.

Before you buy an electric guitar, get the best amp you can get for your money, then buy the guitar. A good guitar will sound really bad on a crappy amp. The best amp brands are Marshall and Fender. I wouldn't buy anything else.
