Question:

What else can I do to best take care of my Sun Conure?

I have a pet Sun Conure that I've been raising for a while now and he's almost 2 years old now. I keep him in a medium sized cage and he has something that hangs from the top made out of cotton and silk that he sleeps in (he loves it).

I feed him apples and parrot food (seeds and pellets). I change his water 2-3 times a day and constantly make sure it's cleaned. He's out of his cage often so he doesn't feel trapped in it (about 4-5 hours a day and when he's being good for more than that).

Can I do anything else to make him happier?

  1. Just give him a good food variety and watch for veggies that can be poisonous.  Thawed frozen corn or chunks of fresh on the cob is my birds favorite.  You can also give some banana, grapes, carrot, and other things.  I get those "ZuPreem" fruit flavor pellets and sprinkle a few on my bird's seed just for variety/treat.  I believe you can overdose vitamins, I have a Rainbow Lory I've had since a baby (over 30 yrs.) and he gets vitamins (I like Nekton, pricey, but great) 2 times a week.  Here's a very helpful article written by a vet, a bird specialist (I've taken birds to him in the past):

  2. I have green cheek conures, i asked thir doctor the same question, he said, "no fruit as the sugar in fruits mix with pellets and can cause food poisoning". I had a hard time digesting this idea at first but then i figured since in nature birds don't take pellets, it is probably due to the pellet structure that goes bad with fruit. So may be no more apple!

this is what i do, I got them mixture of vegetable, corn, carrot, pea, beans, wheat, potato, and they love it. Also sweet potato mixed with beans sometimes, i also want to give them some lettuces from now on more often, oh they also like cucumbers sliced or cut the skin thick and let them chew on it,.

let him have more sun shine !! (behind the windows doesn't cound), put the cage in sun/shade so it doesn't make him get too hot, or you can buy full spectrum lamp and have it on top of his cage during day or around the house that is what i do.

if you can cover his cage at nights so he doesn't get any light, i think it is necessary for them to have enough dark hours, noise is not a problem but light has to be reduced during night.

i also don't feed my birds any seed on daily basic, on rare occasions only for treat, and a little bit, not much, oily seeds doesn't do well for them.

also, you can make him some toys with cotton robes to play with,  stay away from metals cause they can be toxic unless you know what you are using is safe, but you can get creative by natural stuff even vegetables, i color cotton with blackberry so it taste and look better and make a little huf-huffy puffy ball and hang it so they can play with it.

i hope it helps. good luck.

  3. How about taking him for a ride is his own Ferrari?  Sounds like he is in a great situation except you did not mention his toys.  He needs them and they need to be changed often.
