Question:

What else can I do to keep my house cool?

Yesterday it was about 98 and today its supposed to be 101, at least and it may get hotter. I need advice on how to keep my house cool.

I live in an older rental house w/ poor insulation. It has no attic so the heat just comes right in.

I would love to run out and buy an air conditioner but that is not an option right now.

At the moment I open all the windows and doors as soon as I get up. I put a couple of fans in the doorways where I feel a breeze. Pulling the cool air in.

I keep all the drapes drawn until the evening when it gets cooler. Later in the evening when it is cooler outside then inside I open everything up and start to pull the cool air in again...

Any other tips would be helpful. THanks!

  1. Well you can keep your house cooler by making sure the doors are sealed properly so that it won't let the cool air out of your house. But you can keep your self cooler my drinking cold beverages preferably water this will cool your core temperature

  2. I think they covered about everything.  When you cook, cook enough for more than one meal, then refrigerate or freeze it. That way you won't be heating up the house 'every' meal. Keep the curtains or blinds closed on the east side in the mornings (sunrise) and the west side in the evenings (sunset). Placing a pan of water in front of the fan will make the air it blows cooler. Just my 2¢ worth. Hope it, along the others, helps you. :)

  3. You can keep cooler by consuming certain foods,  Like eating fruits, and of course eating lighter, in general, as you must know we eat to fuel so , that's the general idea.    keep lots of cool drinks like lite lemon aide lightly sweetened... if at all.....eat  more salads.. and so forth you get the picture.... Wear neck wraps that you saturate in water ,  wrap it around you neck.... hang in there summer will be over before you now it.  Brookstone has lots of ideas in that dept.... good luck tt

  4. Open the windows at night when it's cooler... but close them when you get up before the temperature starts to go up. Make sure that all the blinds are closed during the day so that the sunshine won't heat your house more. Turn the fan on your furnace without turning the heat on. This will circulate the cooler air from underneath the house. Good luck!

  5. I run my furnace fan during the day, brings up the cooler air from the basement.  Do crock pot cooking for meals.

  6. Sounds like you've got it covered.  Can you ask the landlord to install a few ceiling fans?  those standing oscillating fans do a good job too.  They are taller and larger than a tabletop fan, so really move the air around nicely.  Save laundry and oven use for eveing hrs. to help keep thing cool.
