  1. When I went I visited the Vatican which was great, the colesseum, which was amazing , and pompeii which was boring and I wouldn't visit again

  2. Im so jealous! ask the hotel - sometimes they can offer suggestions as to what to do, or where to go. if you find a local restauarant, ask the patrons to suggest something. Have fun, and be safe!

  3. In 7 days, you'll have plenty of time to see the main attractions of Rome and take day trips on two or three days. Ostia Antica is a good short day trip. You can also get to Pompeii, Capri, Florence, Tivoli, Orvieto, Perugia, ... There are lots of options depending on your interests. Personally, I'd highly recommend any of the above, but particularly Pompeii and Florence if you haven't already seen them. There are organized tours from Rome, but you can easily do any of these using the train system. You can use the Italian train website to plan a trip: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

However, there are also a lot of lesser known, but interesting things in Rome. San Pietro in Vincoli displays the chains that St Peter was brought to Rome and the Moses of Michelangelo. Santa Maria Sopra Minerva near the Pantheon is worth a visit.

Some of the more obscure, but interesting, things are:

The view through the keyhole at the Consiglio di Malta on Aventine Hill. There's a picture here: http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/photo23...

This is worth the effort to find (close to Circus Maximus) - relatively few do. This site give directions on how to find it: http://wikitravel.org/en/Rome/Aventino

The Crypt at Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini is also worth a visit if you're interested in seeing works of art made from the bones of .more than 4000 monks. http://www.cappucciniviaveneto.it/

The Museum of the Souls of Purgatory is essentially a ghost museum. http://initaly.com/regions/museums/micha...

Or you could go to the Pasta Museum or the Presepi (nativity scene) museum across the street from the forum. There's also a 2000+ year old pyramid but it's a little more out of the way.

I also like the Mouth of Truth.

  4. Biggest reason to go to Italy is Pompeii---this is the experience of a lifetime----get the train down to Naples and get to Pompeii, no matter what else you do. It's not a big place, it won't take you long to walk around the whole city, and they have a restaurant/bar for tourists right in the middle of it.

Rome is interesting, but Pompeii is much more important--be there or be square!

  5. Well the other posts have it covered but for a little extra In Rome, def go out clubbing and then on the way home in the wee hours of the morning (5-6am), knock on the local bakery (they shouldn't get mad)  while they're preparing pizzas etc. for the day and get some pizzas with only the sauce (really cheap) and so good. Also try to get some of the pan au chocolates (chocolate croissants) and an espresso in the morning (before they run out at around 9.)  I loved going for lunch around the Vatican (in Otaviano) and drinks in Trastervere.  Also shopping and chilling in Piazza del Popolo. Romans are really friendly so don't be afraid to talk to them, and you'll probably get some new friends who will take you out to experience some "real" Roman culture!
