The only modern time surviving "empire" is Japan. The Emperor Akihito (tennō, literally "heavenly sovereign,") of Japan is the country's monarch. It pre-supposes that there is one society when there are many.

Also it pre-supposes that some empire rules the society in question.

If we take society to be Western society, then we would have to say that it is not ruled by an empire.

The only country presently ruled by an Emperor is Japan. But Japan is only one country. And most people would not consider Japan to be an Empire.

Well American obviously, biggest empire out there right now. Its hard to see it if you live in America, but try visiting some other countries and you'll see the influence. Take Japan, English names for stores and words borrowed from english are becoming more and more common.
