  1. Compact fluorescents are made that fit ceiling fans exactly as incandescents would.

    They can be a bit hard to find.  Any major home improvement store should be able to get them for you, and they're available online.

  2. I have 4  14 watts cfl bulbs on mine. It replaces a 60 watts traditional bulb that gives off more heat than light.

  3. Use compact fluorescents.  (Most of them are shaped like pigtails.)  A 10 or 15 watt cf will replace a 45 or 60 watt non-cf bulb, and save you a lot of energy, especially since most ceiling fans have four bulbs.

  4. Compact halogen bulbs. They're the ones that look like a coil wrapped up in a spiral. They s***w in just like a regular light bulb.
