I am wanting to change out a bad inline 4 cyl motor in my boat to something bigger. The outdrive is a Alpha 1. I need to know what different motors this Alpha 1 will handle and bolt upto. The boat is a 1987. Any help would be apreciated.

Thank you.

  1. In addition to richards answer, which is all basically correct, 4 cylinder motors have only 1 mount in the front, while a V6 has two, on the sides.  Does your boat have stringers/strongbox that will accomodate a bigger motor?  My advice.... rebuild what you have, or buy a remanufactured 4 cylinder.  The reman will be 20 HP more.  If you want a faster boat, buy a faster boat.

  2. Even though you have an alpha, it comes in at least three different gear ratios.  So you could have a 4,6,and 8 cly engine and an Alpha drive.  The "Y"pipe would be a "single for the 4 cly, where a 6 or 8 would need the  "Y" shaped pipe.  Also the bell housing is different.  You might find it better to cash out the current boat and pick up a used boat, using the money you saved by not trying a complicated engine exchange! Best of luck!!!

Part of your answer, "Check the gain on the amp, make sure its not all the way down."

    So where should it be?

The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS coming from the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp to prevent clipping (damage by over powering).

Here is a guide that will help you set the gain correctly http://www.datafilehost.com/download.php...

You'll need a multi-meter (AC voltmeter, $15 from Radio$hack), Microsoft Excel and a way to burn an audio CD from an MP3.
