  1. You need an underground storage tank, an overhead tank, good quality water filter (if planning to use this for drinking/cooking), pipes channels , collectors to collect water.

Most of the harvested water is from roof tops, concrete paths. this is channeled into the underground storage tank and stored there.

From the underground tank its pumped into overhead tank and from there supplied inside house.

Filter attached to faucet in kitchen for filtering water for drinking/cooking.

There are many ways of harvesting rain water the one mentioned above is most generic, the methods differ based on what kind of house you have ? do you have a well/borewell/pond etc.

  2. You can also purchase rain barrels that are attached to the end of your downspouts from the roof. When the rain comes into the gutters, it is collected in the rain barrels. I have seen these around the neighborhood and heard them advertised, but don't know where to actually purchase them.

  3. homemade devise such as cut the top half off gallon of milk, some kind of hose with tape and run the water threw a couple filters then inot a boiling pot...then its clean

  4. a large roof will do as a collector, a large tank for storage and any commercial water purification system, that will include filters and sterilization features, to prepare the water is good enough.

a family of 4 requires 250 m^3 per year, The area of the collector and the volume of the tank should be based on that data + data about annual rain amounts and distribution.
