  2. Mask.

Put on your face in shop, push on, hold your breath if it sticks it's OK. Choose for widest angle. If you need glasses or contacts see what it's like underwater before you decide to order a prescription mask, often as its magnified underwater you'll be OK.

    Snorkel.

Fat, short with a kink. Learn to use it properly and you'll never need the ones with gadgets (valves/balls).

    Footwear.

Flippers for open water. Full shoe rubber type are better if you can find your size, ones with back-straps are OK though especially if you eventually get a wet or dry suit. You'll need something for the current and most flippers are suitable, so go for comfort.

Dive boot for coastal snorkeling. If your getting in and out around rocks and/or only staying inshore, or in shallow water; better to go with a suitable dive boot or similar as flippers can get in the way.

    Dive knife with sheath.

No not for fighting sharks or looking cool, but for cutting yourself out of discarded netting.

As I don't know where you are, I don't know the water temperature. If its cold you'll need a dry suit.

    Fatcs/Tips

Spit in your dry mask, rub it around and wash it out in the water before putting it on.

When you surface blow hard through you snorkel.

With practice you can get to 30ft down.

Stay inshore or with friends, currents are treacherous.

    Don't touch anything.

    Have fun

  3. Bugger, Simon D just about covered the lot.... but...... instead of spitting in your mask try rubbing a smear of Johnsons 'no tears' baby shampoo on the inside then give a quick rinse out before use - it lasts longer than spit and smells nicer!

  4. You need a snorkel pipe and a mask. Make sure you don't do the mask up too tightly - it should have a fairly loose but snug fit - you can seal it by breathing in through your nose. When you dive below the surface, seal the pipe with your lips and then when you come back up to the surface you will be able to blow unwanted water from pipe.
