  1. You will need a receiver (amp), dvd player, and speakers. A minimum of a center channel, front left, front right, left surround, right surround, and a sub-woofer. These 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer make a "5.1" system. You can also have a 6.1 or 7.1 system (by adding 1 or 2 additional rear surround speakers, respectively).

Depending on how much money you want to spend and how hardcore you want your setup to be will determine approach. Many manufacturers make decent "home theater in a box" sets, which include pretty much  everything you need. These usually range from about $200 bucks to about $1000 (unless you get an overrated and overpriced Bose system, which can cost more). The other option is to get each component seperately, which typically will cost more.

When getting a system, be sure to invest in some good wire/s connections. I'm not necessarily saying to go out and buy a $150 6-foot MonsterCable wire. Some people debate this, but in my opinion, you can get reasonably priced connections without going with big name brands (ie. MonsterCable). You probably won't even be able to tell the difference. Just make sure you get at least 16 gauge speaker wire (many sets come with speaker wire but they are much too thin) and either "optical" audio wire or "digital coaxial". I hear both have comparable sound quality but optical is better at insulating so there is less chance of interference. Good luck.
