Question:

What equipment should every storm chaser own?

This year, I'm planning on filming hurricanes and tornadoes here in Florida. I have a camcorder and I'm planning on purchasing a rain cover. Are there any rain covers that could stand category 5 hurricane winds and rain. How about tornado winds and hail? Are there any protective gear I should buy like a helmet? Do I need a permit to storm chase? If a mandatory evacuation is ordered, do I need a permit to stay here and film in Manatee county?

  1. There are many resources available online about storm chasing or related topics. You will find links embedded throughout this module to some of these. You might notice that some experienced weather chasers are not particularly welcoming to newcomers to the hobby. This "cold shoulder" response is multifactorial, but undoubtedly stems from a feeling that newcomers enter the hobby on a whim without researching the realities of chasing.

  2. You need a laptop with a mobile wireless card so that you can have radar. This is important so you don't drive into the hail core or in the path of the tornado.

If you have not been through a storm spotter training course then you must take a course.Your local branch of the NWS should have info on classes.

You need to have a police scanner. This way you will know where roads are closed and can recieve damage reports.

You don't need a permit (to my knowledge)

And if a mandatory evacuation is issued I would get leave any way.
