  2. Actually what you need is (in terms of recreational diving):

Regulator with first stage. - That is the thingy that is connected to your tank at the back. You usually have two moutpieces, one is backup and the other is your main air supply which you should keep in your mouth at all time. You will also have a submersible pressure gauge (which shows you how much pressure you still have in your tank) and a low-pressure hose that should connect to your BCD.

BCD (buoyancy control device) - This is the west that you see divers wear and that you can mount the tank on. The west is inflatable which let's you control your bouyance under/in water.

Tank - filled with breathable air, it is usually mounted on the back of your BCD.

Mask and Snorkel - Mask so that you can see clearly underwater. Snorkel to ease breathing at surface.

Fins - To propel yourself underwater. With bare feets you will exhaust yourself very fast.

Weightbelt - To make you negatively buoyant, otherwise you might experience trouble when trying to dive underwater.

You also need some kind of protective suit. Depending on the conditions and climate it can range from just shorts and a t-shirt to a full body covered drysuit.

But the most important thing is a diving certificate! You can obtain one from the folowing diving schools:

    http://www.padi.com

    http://www.cmas.org

You can find friends and learn more about diving by joingin a scuba diving community, such as http://www.scubuddies.com

Scuba equipment can be quite expensive though, try to rent at first to see if you like the sport. Then maybe go for buying a second hand at ebay (a lot of divers buy equipment and then realize they don't have time to dive, so you can find good equipment there).
