  1. This period is known as the Georgian era.  The years between 1810-1820 (the period when Jane was at her most prolific) are generally known as the Regency Era, because it was when the Prince Regent (who became King George IV in 1820) was ruling as regent for his father, King George III, who had gone insane.  But it was still part of the Georgian era, which basically lasted from the accesion of King George I (in 1714) until the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837).

Queen Victoria's reign (the Victorian era) lasted from 1837 until January 1901, when she died.  The Edwardian era encompassed the reign of her son, who became king Edward VII in 1901, and died in 1910.

  2. It's the Napoleonic Era.

Ever heard of Napoleon? He tried to rule the world at that time. He started as an unimportant officer in the French army. Being the follower of the right revolutionists he started to climb the career ladder. The end came when he crown himself emperor and made some bad military choices.

Therefore this era is name after him.

  3. The Victorian era of the United Kingdom refers to Queen Victoria's rule which began in June 1837 and concluded in January 1901.  IOW, mid 19th century to the turn of the 20th century.

The Edwardian period or Edwardian era in the United Kingdom is the period covering the reign of King Edward VII, 1901 to 1910. IOW, the first decade of the 20th century.

Jane Austen, OTOH, lived from 1775 - 1817, IOW, late 18th to early 19th century.  She died 20 years before the start of the Victorian era.

  4. Neither.  It is the Regency, named because it was during the regency of the Prince of Wales, later to be King George IV, who ruled in place of his father (George III) due to the king's insanity.  Many modern scholars think the king suffered from Porphyria.  In the US, much of the period is known as the Federal Period.

  5. That would be the Napoleon era, in fact it was Napoleon's misstress that was the first to really wear that style of dress with the high waist because she was trying to conceal the fact that she was pregnant. The fashion caught on so well that everyone started making their dresses like that. Before that the dresses had lower waist and were much more form fitting from above the hips up.

  6. The Regency era was 1811-1820, when the future George IV ruled as regent for his father, George III (of American Revolution fame), after George III was deemed unfit to rule. Austen is most generally associated with the Regency period.

Prior to that (and including it) was the Georgian period, which actually extended from 1714 to 1830, through Kings George I, II, III, and IV.

The Victorian period (1837-1901) was during the reign of Queen Victoria and the Edwardian period immediately followed it, when England was ruled by her son Edward VII (1901-1910.)

This is a fun site with info about these periods, using the British terms: http://www.erasofelegance.com/

A few other terms are also associated with the same period:

The Napoleonic era extends roughly from 1799-1815, the main period of Napoleon's activities.

The Age of Sail extended roughly from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

  7. Right around the war of 1812 (duh) and really when the Americas were starting to develop. Still rather Puritan lifestyles, without all the strictness.
