  1. When the atom bombs were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, it ended the war. It was controversial because the cities were left in ruin, many people died or were left homeless, they continued to die years after from the radiation: it cause leukemia and other medical complications.

  2. The use of Atomic Bombs. As far as why it was controversial, that should be obvious.

  3. The use of the atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was the event that brought about the end of WW2. The event was extremely controversial because it was highly frowned upon to kill so many innocent civilians. War was meant to stay between military personnel and not meant to be used as an excuse to attack civilians.

  4. World War2 was ended using the two atomic bombs code named Fat-man and Little Boy. They were the first time these were ever used. The Japanese citizens in the two cities bombed either died for the blast when the bombs exploded or died from radiation poisoning some time after being exposed to it. Some died a slow painful death from cancer etc.  They were used because the Americans feared in they invaded Japan the number of Allied soldier killed could be at least one million, knowing the Japanese would defend to the death their country. They came to this conclusion by how fiercely the Japanese defended islands like Iwo Jima where the Americans suffered thousands of dead and wounded. And these islands weren't even part of Japan, so if they defended them that way, what would they do to protect their homeland.

  5. The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Upon becoming President in April 1945, Harry Truman inherited a very expensive bomb project that had always aimed at producing a military weapon. Furthermore, he was faced with the prospect of an invasion and he was told that the bomb would be useful for impressing the Soviet Union. He therefore saw no reason to avoid using the bomb. Alternatives for ending the Pacific war other than an invasion of atomic-bombing were available, but are more obvious in hindsight than they were at the time.

  6. The United States destroyed the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with atomic bombs. The prospect of "complete and utter destruction" , in the words of President Truman, brought Japan to accept the Allied terms of surrender. As Japan was the last remaining member of the Axis, it was the end of World War II.

It was highly controversial, as were all the other bombing campaigns by the USAAF and RAF against Germany and Japan, because the attacks were aimed at killing civilians, destroying civilian infrastructure, and instilling fear. (basically what the Germans and Japanese were guilty of). It was a war crime that killed over 200,000 civilians. It was also the first use of a very destructive and very mysterious new weapon.
