hey, they compete in none its a personality contest not a beauty contest some of the roses sing dance or say a poem but its not compulsory and is not taken into account when deciding the winner

From what I know about it, it is not a Beauty Pageant in the True sense. What they are looking for is Beauty and Personality and Charm, and the Ability to tell a Story or Sing and Dance. It is the Personification of a nice Irish Girl.Mary O Connor that the Song was about was a nice Irish Girl from Tralee that the Son of the Big House fell in Love with and His Father Banished Him away to some Boarding School in England to get Him away from Mary whom he thought was not good enough for his Son.Years later the Son came Home and started looking for Mary and was told that an O Connor had Died thinking it was Her Mother He found Her Grave in the Local Cemetery and was Heartbroken and He Wrote the Song ,The Rose of Tralee. So the Object of the Contest is to find the Nice Irish Girl that was represented by Mary O Connor. So Beauty and Charm and Personality and Perhaps a Song and Dance.You can also View the Grave of Mary O Connor in Tralee County Kerry.
