Her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia  was the youngest daughter of Emperor Nicholas II of Russia, the last sovereign of Imperial Russia, and his wife Alexandra Fyodorovna.

Anastasia was a younger sister of Grand Duchess Olga, Grand Duchess Tatiana and Grand Duchess Maria, and was an elder sister of Alexei Nikolaievitch, Tsarevitch of Russia. She is presumed to have been murdered with her family on July 17, 1918, by forces of the Bolshevik secret police. However, rumors have persisted of her possible escape since 1918.

Several women have claimed to have been Anastasia, the most famous of whom was Anna Anderson. Anderson's body was cremated upon her death in 1984. Despite support for her claim from several people who knew Anastasia, DNA testing in 1994 on pieces of Anderson's tissue and hair showed no relation to DNA of the Grand Duchess.

Forensic evidence uncovered the mystery of Anastasia,after all but 2 of the remains of the Romanovs were found,near Ekaterinberg,in the 1990's.

Anastasia's remains were there,although the Tsarevitch Alexei and his sister Tatania were missing.

It has not been established what had happenned to them.

Until a few years ago only one body was missing from the mass grave of the family. There was one body they were unsure if it was one of two sisters. Anastasia or the next oldest. They in more recent years have found that missing body in a different part of the woods where the family was buried. All bodies are accounted for, and dna testing has confirmed family ties. I do not know if the last body and the unknown body were finally decided, but all are there.

Until 1996 or so, it was quite unclear whether Anastasia was killed with her family or if the 'mysterious woman' claiming it was her was truly the daughter of Romanov family.

After "Anastasia" death, the DNA test was performed and it was established she was not the Romanov. More DNA tests were performed on a family of a Polish servant, who was suspected as being the imposter, and apparently that is who the woman claiming to be the surviving Anastasia really was.

Sadly no - my erudite friends here explain very well.  The woman who claimed to be Anastasia for many years turned out to be a polish farm girl or something.  Anyway they DNA'd her remains and she was not a Romanov and most likely was in fact the Polish woman.

Great story though isnt it - one of the big mysteries of the 20th Century.

The rumor is that she did, but I believe that when they dug up the Romanovs to intern them in the cathedral they were all accounted for.

Several people claimed to be Anastasia, but the DNA proved that they weren't her. No one really knows for sure if she survived, but it is a possibility since the grave with her entire family is missing her bones.

She was believed to be murdered along with the rest of her family including both of her parents and four siblings.

The legend of Anastasia's possible survival and escape begins when Anna Anderson, the most famous Anastasia claimant, would contend that she had feigned death amongst the bodies of her family members and servants, and that she was able to make her escape with the help of a compassionate guard who rescued her from amongst the corpses after noticing that she was still alive. She was one of at least ten women who claimed to be Anastasia. DNA tests were conducted in 1994 on a tissue sample from Anderson and according to the tests Anna Anderson could not be related to Tsar Nichlas or Tsarina Alexandra. Anderson's mitochondrial DNA was a match with a great-nephew of Franziska Schanzkowka, a missing Polish factory worker.

On August 23, 2007, a Russian archaeologist announced the discovery of two burned, partial skeletons at a bonfire site near Yekaterinburg. The archaeologists said the bones are from a boy who was roughly between the ages of ten and thirteen years at the time of his death and of a young woman who was roughly between the ages of eighteen and twenty-three years old. Anastasia was seventeen years, one month old at the time of the assassination, while her sister Maria was nineteen years, one month old and her brother Alexei was two weeks shy of his fourteenth birthday. Anastasia's elder sisters Olga and Tatiana were twenty-two and twenty-one years old at the time of the assassination. Along with the remains of the two bodies, archaeologists found "shards of a container of sulfuric acid, nails, metal strips from a wooden box, and bullets of various caliber." The bones were found using metal detectors and metal rods as probes. Tests are still being conducted on the remains to determine whether they are the remains of the two missing Romanov children. On 28 September it was announced by the regional authorities that it was "highly probable" the remains belonged to Alexei and one of his sisters.
