Does anyone know what he is doing now - was he given a jail term? I thought I had heard this and if so for how long?

  2. Many things happened to Donald Curry.  One of them was Sugar Ray Leonard.  I can't blame Leonard totally but he did play a key role in the decline of Curry.  Here's how.

Curry had been struggling to make 147 for quite some time.  He was young and growing naturally out of the welterweight division.  Like most of his contemporaries, he idolized Leonard.  After knocking out Milton McCrory to unify the 147 title, Curry planned to move up to 154 and, ultimately to face Marvin Hagler at 160.

At the time, Leonard was still in retirement.  He preserved himself while Hagler went life and death with Tommy Hearns and John Mugabi.  Little did anyone know, Leonard was WELL into planning his comeback against Hagler.  He watched Marvin closely and trained secretly like a demon, all the while goading Hagler with the "possibility" of a  big money fight.  He didn't want Hagler to retire.  He also didn't want anyone else to beat Marvin.  Like him or not, Leonard is a very smart man.

Curry went to Leonard for advice after defeating McCroy.  He recalled an earlier conversation he had with Leonard regarding the "prestige" of being the Undisputed Welterweight Champion.  Curry wanted to move up but Leonard persuaded him to defend the Undisputed title.

Ever so trusting, Curry took Leonard's advice, against his better judgment.  I laugh with people give Lloyd Honeyghan so much credit for beating Curry.  Honeyghan really was not a very good fighter.   I give him credit for KNOWING that Curry was DRAINED.  He killed himself to make weight.  He should NEVER have taken that, or any other fight at 147.

Anyone who knew boxing knew that Donald had a very good chance of upsetting Hagler.  It's difficult to believe now, given the direction Curry's career took after Honeyghan, but it was a very realistic point of view at the time.

Curry, now defeated, is now out of the way.  This paved the way for Leonard to make his comeback.  His timing was perfect as Hagler left a big piece of himself in the ring against Hearns and Mugabi.  ANYONE who knew Marvin knew he was not the same after those two wars.  He lacked that famous "Destruct and Destroy" mentality when he faced Leonard.

Hagler made the mistake of allowing Leonard to get in his head.  Call it as you will but it really wasn't a great fight.  It was more of an event which is really what Leonard wanted.

Curry went on to lose to Mike McCallum and later have his career take a downward spiral.  Leonard went on to make a few more comebacks, dictate the terms in a few fights and pick up a few more titles.
