I'm trying to make a simple hygrometer to know the humidity. I don't know what simple materials I could use aside from hair. Please give me some items.

  1. Anything soft and dry.

  2. Here's how to make a Hygrometer. You will need:

    2 room thermometers

a small piece of cotton material

    thread

    quart Milk carton

    Rubber bands

    scissors

    and water.

Here's what you do. Make sure the 2 thermometers register the same room temp for accuracy. Cover the bulb of one of the thermometers with a 2 inch scrap of cotton material ( an old handkerchief works well). Tie it on with thread, and leave a Tail hanging down an inch or so. Using rubber bands, attach the 2 thermometers to two sides of the carton. Cut a small hole just below the thermometer with the covered bulb. Push the tail of the fabric through the hole. Fill the carton with water up to the hole, so the cotton can be kept wet. The temp. of the wet bulb will always be colder, due to evaporation. The drier the air, the further the two temps. will be. When the temps. are the same, the humidity is 100%.

    Good Luck!!

  3. Well if u're looking for more technical alternative choose either silica gel , powdered charcoal or even anhydrous Calcium Chloride , all are easily available .
