What exactly are grits and hominy grits.. are they anything like Hash Browns?

  1. Not even a little. Hominy is a kind of corn. I've tried it canned, in whole-kernel form, and it tastes like wet lumps of cardboard.

    Grits are basically ground-up hominy. My mother grew up in Ohio, and she said the first time someone at a restaurant brought her grits, she wondered why someone put Cream of Wheat on her plate. I can understand the confusion, since grits do look like that.

    Most people either hate grits, or they adore them. Me, I think they're just a good vessel for butter and salt. And sometimes cheese. Mmmm, cheese grits.


  2. Similar to cornmeal, cooked in water.  Hashbrowns are potatoes.

  9. I stopped for breakfast whilst on holiday in Florida. I had eggs bacon hash browns and the waitress asked if I wanted some grits. Not knowing what they were I said yes. It came up on the same plate. Looked and tasted like porridge

  10. Grits are made from hominy. Corn soaked in lye -- the rural Mexicans soak in wood ashes -- to remove the corn kernel hulls. Then the left over kernel is ground into grits or, what I like, corn masa for tortillas. Served on the side with dishes like boiled ham, grits is like oatmeal in consistency.

  11. Absolutely not even close to hash browns, as others have said. It's simply a porridge made of ground corn (grits and hominy grits are the same thing. But hominy by itself refers to the soaked corn kernels before they've been ground up.) I'd say the texture is somewhere between cornmeal and cream of wheat. Traditionally it's eaten savory with salt, pepper & butter. A lot of people in my area like to melt cheddar cheese into it. Very good with bacon, eggs, and toast.

  12. Hominy referrs to corn without the germ. It is served both whole or ground. Hominy is boiled until cooked and served as either a cereal or as a vegetable. Hominy may also be pressed into patties and fried. This dish is especially popular in the southern United States. Samp is another name for coarse hominy. Hominy ground into small grains is sometimes called "hominy grits."

    Not a thing like hasbrowns.

  13. Grits are a finely ground grain that people usually grow in the south, and are like (i know this sounds gross) Corn oatmeal. it is more of a salty oatmeal than hashbrowns. Hominy grits are almost the same. They are the corn without the germ. This doesn't mean that grits will make you sick.  Also, you can flatten these grits into patties, when they are cooked, but that doesn't make them any more related to hashbrowns. If you want something like hashbrowns, go for the real thing.
