What exactly are hieroglyphs?

Are they symbols or worlds. Silent language? I am just not sure. I mean it's not an important question, I was just wondering.

hieroglyphics is the greek word for sacred writing and that is exactly what they are. they were inscribed and read soley by priests. in a sense they are magical and divine writings that exist in a world of their own, i.e. you can destroy a person and nullify him from history simply by erasing his cartouche. the spoken common language of ancient egypt was far different than the poetic language of the hieroglyphics.

hieroglyphic is an ancient language of the ancient egyptians they used to use pictures and symbols as letters  so one word like "SNAKE" wud have 5 different symbols or pictures each representin a different letter
