What exactly are the TOEFL and the SAT ?

  1. TOEFL = Test of English as a Foreign Language. Basically, tests whether you speak good English. You need it only if you don't live in an English-speaking country. It consists of 4 parts: speaking, writing, listening, reading. Maximum score: 120 (on the iBT test).

    SAT = College admission test. You need it for - well, basically for all respectable US colleges. It consists of 3 parts: Math, Verbal, Writing. Maximum score: 2400
