Only serious answers please...here is our dilemma. We have cracks in our unit ceiling due to weight of snow this winter. There is also cracks in the Common Areas. The association insurance wont cover our unit but will cover the common area. Our insurance, after a lot of fighting, is covering our damage but there is a $500 deductible. I guess I just feel that it is not my fault that the snow did not get shoveled off because I am not the president of the association. I thought that was his job?? We are planning on asking the association to pay our deductible. Does this sound wrong to anyone?

  1. Well, most of the time, it's a volunteer position - and it's basically to run the board meetings.

Each association can define duties however they like.

It's not the president's fault that the snow didn't get shoveled off.  You're not going to get the "association" to pay your deductible.  If they did, they'd have to pay EVERYONE'S deductible, and you'd see a massive increase in the association fees.

If you don't like the way that your volunteer president manages things, YOU need to run for president, and put in all the hours, unpaid.  And heck, get up on the roof to shovel the snow.

OR, you can propose that your association hires a MANAGEMENT company, and increases association fees accordingly, to pay the management company.  It's probably going to run $1000 per unit per year, for a management company, so divide that by 12 to get your increased fee amount.

Sorry, this hits a sore spot - I used to date a guy that was his association president, and NO ONE ever wanted to volunteer to help with ANYTHING.  AT the same time, they'd call him and demand that he, as president, change all the light bulbs whenever they burned out.  It's a thankless job, and no one wants to do it.
