depending. there are a variety of hot dogs out there. usually the simple hot dogs are made with some meat and other stuff from the animal cow.

Contains meat, meat fat, fillers eg bread crumbs, and spices. The meat is usually beef or pork but nowadays turkey and chicken or even imitation meat are also used to satisfy consumer desire for supposedly healthier meat. It may include meat byproducts such as liver or kidney but must be stated.

A lot of the meat is mechanically retrieved from bones but its percentage must also be stated in the ingredient list. The legal limit for fat content is 30% and for added water 10%.

Overall there are many manufacturers, types and qualities of hot dogs. They contain nitrates/nitrites as preservatives and are highly processed.

I used to work at a pork processing plant and trust me they use ALL of the leftover parts of the hog!! It's amazing though because hot dogs are so good.

The best advice is, if you are going to eat it, make sure it's been cooked thoroughly.  As kids, our parents were in the food business and knew butchers.  We used to eat them right out of the butcher's cold case (as did the butcher we knew)..  Later we learned that you can't assume that the meat & fat is all you are getting and so we continued eating them but well cooked.

a) A torpedo bread roll with a frankfurter and all of the trimmings.

b) A deep fried battered savaloy on a stick.
