  1. They sell things to the Department of Defense. Your friend's situation, however, could be anything, including not related to the fact that the company he works for is a defense contractor. Maybe they needed someone to substitute for a colleague who was ill. Could be anything.

  2. It depends on the contractor. Sodexho USA provides food and facilities services, Haliburton USA provides food and construction services, Boeing USA provides aircraft research and production services, etc.

  3. Work related to national security and defense.  It requires a security clearance.  There is no way to guess exactly what he is doing.

  4. He could mop floors or build biological weapons.

  5. It could be anything.  Contractors provide products and services to the military.  The DOD also hires contractors when they need special skills and the government pay system cannot pay enough to get those people to work for them.

  6. they overcharge the govt and are rude and obnoxious to the federal workers

  7. There are unteen-zillion contractors working on DOD contracts of all sorts.  Most of them don't actually work directly for DOD, but work for a company that has a contract with DOD.  Some of these folks are working on highly-classified matters that do involve occasional travel.  So, this guy's story is not beyond the realm of the possible.
