What exactly does a man HEAR when a woman says the phrase, " ok. whatever. forget it"?

I have been told that the answer would surprise me.

That phrase tells me- "Ok I disagree with you and I don't even want to hear your side- SHUT UP!" It tells me they are mad and pushing me away.

Whatever- for git 'bout it!

I hear "I am boiling mad at you but I want you to keep on asking me what the problem is. It shows that you care. But I am still mad at you and sooner or later I am going to let you have it! Just keep on asking me whats wrong, maybe buy me some flowers. Suck up to me a bit, and then maybe I will tell you whats wrong. Then we can have great make up s*x when it's all said and done."

Well, being a man, and hearing that phrase myself a few times, it means that the dude is in big doo doo. Even though the lady said, forget it, she never will let the guy do that. Face it, if that is told to a dude, then he has only heard the begining of the trouble. Peace!

I hear the sound of an abundance of hormones and mis-understandings.

As mentioned by a couple of people already, we hear it usually as it is said.  Then when we go and do what the woman asked us to do (to move on and forget it), we find out that she wants us to somehow have been mind readers and to automatically know what it was that bothered her.

Hint blokes: try it in a woman yourself: it is like giving the 'silent treatment' in that women love doing it but hate receiving it in return..

Ladies, we are not mind readers, and we communicate differently. The female way of communication is no more correct and proper than ours, though western society has allowed that belief to occur.

Off the cuff remarks like that without proper communication can be very manipulative and you don't tolerate it from us.  It is a form of manipulation

We hear exactly what is said that is why we get into so much trouble .

Like "Just forget it" she said "OK" he says "You a hole didn't you know that means I want to fight about it" she screams "But you said to forget it" He returns "Why are men so stupid and incapable of mature communication" she spews. "What the heck is going on I am lost" he exclaims. Et Cetera and so on for 2 more hours.

That line is one of my biggest irritants:  To me if means "I am putting up a wall built from ice cold F-You cubes."

Once a girl says "Whatever" I know I am in for it, past the point of apologies; past the point of no return.  My only hope is to get away for a while or that something takes her mind off the topic in question.

I flinch when I hear it, honestly.

We hear: "I'm right and you'll never admit it.  I'll never forgive you for this and I will bring this episode up during our next argument (and every argument thereafter until the end of time) and beat you over the head with it."

Us guys know we can never "win" an argument with a woman because even if we ever have the facts on our side, you'll just use an old argument to change the subject.

Depending on your tone and personality...it either means exactly that or else it means something along the lines of, "F*ck you, you'll pay for this."

if the argument is winding down, it just means basically what it says, i'm tired of arguing, lets go make up and have s*x :P

He hears exactly what you are saying, but then he looks into your eyes and listens to the tone of your voice... At the end he is completely out of his element. He can not read your mind, and you refuse to let him on of what it is that troubles you. He would like to help, but you do not give him enough information to work with. Eventually, he will follow your verbal instructions, but in the back of his mind he will be frantically looking for the reasons behind your sudden change of mood. One thing is true: he does not forget it.
