  1. An editorial assistant gains experience of all aspects of publishing by assisting senior editorial staff in the administration of the commissioning, planning and production of books, journals, magazines and a broad range of publicity materials. The level of responsibility and the range of tasks depend on the size of the organisation. Much of the work is routine, though essential to the production of publications.

This is the recognised starting point for a career in editorial work. Progress may be possible within the organisation, but in small publishing houses it may be necessary to move to another employer once basic skills and experience have been acquired.
