Question:

What exactly does an environmentalist do?

We've all heard of Al Gore and David Suzuki but I think the former is more of a politician than anything (I mean really does he practice what he preaches?) and the latter is a special case

What does a regular environmentalist do? Is it actually a job? Are all environmentalists also involved with politics?

Ted Kennedy Dumps Fuel into Nantucket Sound

Ted Kennedy has called Nantucket Sound near his Massachusetts estate “a national treasure” — but that didn’t stop the senator from having oil dumped from his yacht into its waters.

A local photographer spotted an oil slick coming from Kennedy’s yacht Mya as Kennedy and his guests left the vessel in a launch following a race that ended in Hyannis, the Cape Cod Today newspaper reported.

The lensman was so shocked that he rowed his dinghy out to question the crew member left aboard the yacht.

He asked the crewman, “What the h**l are you doing?”

The crewman said that diesel fuel had gotten into the bilge and he was told to dump it.

When the photographer pointed out that the yacht was moored in coastal waters near shellfish beds and people swimming, the crewman replied, “Whatever.”

Cape Cod Today published a photo showing the oil slick emanating from Mya.

As Newsmax reported earlier, Kennedy has opposed a proposal to construct a wind farm in Nantucket Sound to produce cheap, clean energy. Asked why, he said: “That’s where I sail.”

  3. Being an environmentalist is not so much a job as a way of life.  Few of us can be the sort of environmentalist David Suzuki is because we do not have his passion and his dedication, but we can do our bit.  Environmentalists take care of the environment.  They try to use less of the earth's resources and to use carefully those that they have to use.  They reuse stuff - bags, containers, etc.  They recycle as much as possible.

Environmental science is a field of study.   Environmental scientists find and fix pollution and other environmental problems. They figure out what is in the air, water, and soil to make sure that the environment is safe. They also give advice on how to clean the environment. For example, they might design a safe way to get rid of trash.

Here is a link about environmental science.  Best of luck.

  4. Environmentalists are professionals like zoologists, chemists, engineers, doctors.... Their main job is to care the environment and try to make it as it is in the natural condition. Depending upon the organization they work on, their job may vary but ultimate goal is to make the world a better place to live on. I don't think all environmentalists are involved with politics. Since national and international politics have a role on dealing environmental problems, it seems that the environmentalists are involved in politics but professionals has nothing to do with politics than regular technical issues.

  5. It has been said already

  6. It is someone that likes to tell others what to do.

  7. An environmentalist is an individual who cares about the world they live in and tries to leave the earth better than they found it, no matter the means taken.

Those such as Al Gore, who live in mansions, travel extensively, and live flambouyantly consuming all that they can are hypocrites, not environmentalists.
