What exactly does provera do?

Ive been having very irregular cycles after coming off the pill. I will go several months without AF. So my dr finally decided to put me on provera. What exactly does this do? i know its supposed to induce AF, but what about the following months? what if again u dont get a period? Ive also heard that sometimes provera makes u a bit more fertile? is that true? what are some of ur experiences on it?

hi there! I was exactly like that after coming off the pill last year.  My cycles were 40-60 days long.  My dr. put my on prometrium (which is like provera) to get my cycle going.  Provera and prometrium work by putting progesterone in your system (the way it would build up before you naturally have a cycle) and when you stop taking it your body has a withdrawl bleed (like on the pill).  Your cycle might come about on it's own the next month or it might not.  I haven't heard about it making you more fertile.  I think some doctors use it in the early stages of pregnancy to sustain a pregnancy if they think their patient needs it, but I'm not too sure.  Really if it has been a while since you got off the pill and your cycles are still really irregular, that could be an indication of a hormonal imbalance.  I have PCOS and have a hormone imbalance.  I actually have to induce my cycle again starting tomorrow so I can start my fertility meds.  If you are still having problems with your cycle and are trying to get pregnant consult a reproductive endocrinologist.  They are very knowledgable about fertility issues and pcos!
