I recently found out that a close friend had been charged with attempted sexual imposition several years ago. He's never said anything about it, but another friend mentioned it to me and I checked the court's public record system. What exactly does that charge mean? And what types of things could cause him to be charged with that?

  1. Assuming you live in the United States, you can look up the law in the criminal code of the state where the charge was brought.  The law will specify what someone has to do to be found guilty of this crime.  Until you know the facts about your friend's specific case, remember that it's one thing to be charged with something and another to be found guilty of it.  Was the charge dismissed, or was your friend convicted?  It should be in the record.

  2. Sexual imposition means you tried to force someone to have some type of s*x act with you. From inappropriate touching to attempted intercourse. Forcing someone to comply with your wishes in a sexual manner against their will. .,

  3. I would guess that this is similar to attempted sexual assault.  Sexual assault is usually defined as some type of unwanted sexual contact.  So he tried to force someone into a situation where there would have been unwanted sexual contact.

This is actually very vague because sexual assault or imposition can come in a variety of degrees from touching someone inappropriately (not as bad) to rape (very bad).  Without knowing the exact definition of this crime (my state has no such crime, it is attempted sexual assault here), it is hard to say what really happened.
