It's more metaphorical. If you live in a glass house - you shouldn't throw stones - as this would provoke others to retaliate and throw stones back at you - which would destroy your 'glass house'.

So in line with this, it basically means - if you can easily be critisized on a topic, don't be hypocritical and preach to others, when your situation is just as sensitive.

it really means that do not poke fun/hurt others as you would not not like them to do the same to you.since if you were living in a glass house and threw stones at others they would do the same to you and have your house broken down.

It's about hypocrisy.  You shouldn't criticize someone for doing something if you do it yourself.  Actions speak louder than words, so rather than preach, you should make your own life an example.  'The pot calling the kettle black' is about the same thing.
