I see a bunch of people in movies like over dosing on sleeping pills in movies, and stuff like that.

What exactly happens? Is it because the heart rate goes up or something? If you do OD then how fast can someone die? Is it possible to die in like 30 minutes from over dosing on sleeping pills?

Sorry if its a weird question .. haha .. just wondering.

  1. to die.. i think it just depends on whatever you're overdosing on. like how strong whatever you're taking is. other than that, i don't know.

  2. the person who ODs gets into a coma..

  3. "OD" stands for Over Dose, which is the body shutting down after being poisoned by an ingested substance.  Depending on what drug is used, the phsyisiological process of OD'ing can be as quiet as falling asleep and never waking up or going into full blown seizures, bleeding from bodily orifices or a painful series of heart attacks.

Regardless of what drug is used, overdosing is a horrible death and it can cause permanent physical and mental damage to those who survive an overdose.

Most OD's occur in people in their 20's and 30's who have used drugs for at least 5 years.  They are actually rare in new users, partly because the drugs have not had enough time to erode the new user's respect for his/her health.

Here are few ways that OD's occur by drug used:

Opiates (heroin, codeine, morphine, prescription painkillers) - The person simply loses the urge to breath.  As the person suffocates, they have no ability to fight for their lives.  Signs of OD include no response to pain stimulus, breathing rate is less than 12 breaths per minute, lips or nail beds turning blue.

Coca (cocaine, lidocaine, crack) - The person becomes increasingly restless, anxious, pale, has difficulty breathing, sweats profusely then collapses from cardiac arrest.  Some people die from major blood vessles bursting suddenly.

Methamphetamine (speed, ice, meth, adderall) - The person may become increasingly aggressive and paranoid with slurred speech, twitching, then collapse into convulsions then cardiac arrest.

Alcohol (beer, wine, liquor) - The manner of death from overdose varies from person to person, but includes decreased coordination, slurring of speech, unconsciousness, vomiting, coma then death.

Cannabis (pot, marijuana, weed) - There are no reported incidents of anyone ever OD'ing on marijuana alone.  Deaths usually occur by consuming marijuana with alcohol.  Marijuana reduces the urge to vomit, which is the primary defense mechanism your body uses to eject excess alcohol from the system.  The person then dies from alcohol poisoning.

  4. I think sleeping pills actually make everything slow down. Like your breathing and heart rate and brain functions. And then you just die. You would probably die after about a half hour from taking them. I guess.

  5. We'll, it depends. If you OD on pain killers it will take a few days to kill you because they slowly break your liver down, apparently it's a really painful way of killing yourself. I had a friend who recently died from a cocaine overdose and the doctor explained to me that her heart rate went up and became smasmodic and that she actually died from a heart attack.
