What exactly is 'stepping' ?

I was watching stomp the yard today and even though it seems like a good story and all, what exactly is stepping? in the beginning when DJ faces off against grant, the announcer dude was like "is he clowning st. louis'

how exactly was he doing that?

While that show seems to be a pure work of fiction, stepping seems to remind me of street dances, like "house" "breakdance" and tricking. You can look them up on You tube. Step dance itself is kind of in the same category of weirdly popular as that crazy Irish dance about 10 years ago.
