What exactly is Fantasy Football and how is it played?

I have been a fan of football for years, and I have wondered what Fantasy Football is and how it is played?

Also, does it cost anything, if so how much?

you get a couple of friends togehter and have a draft party we have 12 teams in my league you can play for free. we join yahoo its free but we

pay$50 a piece winner takes all. players get points for td, yrs, stuff like that lose points for picks,fumbles so you want top players like lt brady, moss , to points are compared to you opp, and who every had more points as a team is the winner you play through the whole season and set up playoffs

Fantasy football is a fantasy sports game in which participants (called "owners") are arranged into a league. The person who creates the league is called the commissioner, and that person invites other owners into his/her league. Each team drafts or acquires via auction a team of real-life American football players and then scores points based on those players' statistical on-the-field performances. A typical fantasy league will employ players from a single football league, such as the NFL or an NCAA division. Leagues can be arranged in which the winner is the team with the most total points at the end of the season, or in a head-to-head format (which mirrors the actual NFL) in which each team plays against a single opponent each week. At the end of the year, win-loss records determine league rankings or qualification into a playoff bracket. Most leagues set aside the last weeks of the regular season for their own playoffs.

Fantasy Football is a game where you and a group of friends (usually 10-12 in total) get together and choose individual players for your teams.  This process of choosing teams is known as a fantasy draft.  As real NFL games are played the players you selected are awarded points based on the stats that they produce during that week's games.  

How the points are scored can vary by league, but typically touchdowns are worth 6 points, running backs and receivers get 1 point per 10 yards rushing or receiving, quarterbacks get 1 point for 25 yards passing etc.  Most fantasy hosting sites (like Yahoo) have a standard scoring if you aren’t sure what you want.

Each week two teams (your team vs. your friend's team for example) play each other each week and the team with the most points wins.  At the end of the season the teams with the best records play each other in a playoff tournament until one team wins the championship.  Typically the fantasy playoffs happen during week 13-16 of the real NFL season.

If you are new to fantasy football I would suggest getting a draft guide or cheat sheet (a ranking of players by position) to study and bring to your draft.  This will help you ensure you don’t forget anyone and give you an idea of where players should be drafted.  Some guides and cheat sheets cost money but you can find decent ones for free.  I included a good free one below if you want it.
