Question:

What exactly is Orbit Downloader and how does it work? Is it reliable?...?

I plan on using it instead of Utorrent (since Utorrent loads files really slowly for me), but is it worth it?

Also, how safe is its P2P connection? Is it necessary to take my firewall off as well?

Please let me know. Thanks.

  1. no P2P is safe... i used to be a P2P zealot untill i found all the spyware they let leak into your system. trust me on this free things come at a price.

  2. No program can speed up downloading they may make it more convenient but cannot increase speed

    REASON

If you are on a 56 k modem the download speed will be approx 4.5 to 5 kbps

and it will not go over that speed no matter how many sites it is from

dsl 1500 will download at 145 to 158 kbps and not over

Most downloader get the file that is downloading fron2 or 5 sites but your download speed will still be what your maximum is

Did you set up Utorrent properly mainimum uploads and a maximum  of  35 downloads

try this site to speed up torrents

  3. Torrents are torrents, and they all use one of a handful of torrent networks - the software isn't going to change that.

P2P is as safe as you allow it to. If a P2P program "leaks" spyware, you're doing something wrong: you trust people.

No matter how you get stuff on your computer, make sure you:

    a. Have an up to date and reliable virus scanner on your system (the "reliable" part excludes AVG, by the way)

    b. Whatever you download - do not open it before you have scanned it. Ever. If it's an ISO file - use a program like IsoBuster to unpack its contents and scan those. If it's a ZIP or RAR file, unzip it and scan it.

    c. That goes for *everything* - viruses and trojans can be initiated by music files and video files as easily as by a program (why do you think programs like WinAmp keeps getting security updates?) or an Office document. If anything contains unknown code or autostart BAT files... delete it.

And as far as the firewall goes: you can add the ports that the software uses as exceptions to your firewall rules.

P2P has the advantage of offering simple downloads (although not sharing stuff back is "frowned upon"... using torrents you're really expected to seed the stream by having what you downloaded available for other people to download in a certain ratio, otherwise you're labeled a "leech" and they pretty much block your IP (worst-case)

What it amounts to is: know what you're doing, and you're good.

If you don't know what you're doing... prepare to be in for a world of hurt (or at least minor inconvenience)
