  20. The Victorian era is known for a certain hypocrisy about s*x.  "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde is a good example of this; Jack/Earnest invents a younger brother so he can go to London whenever he wants and misbehave.  The fact that he was misbehaving with prostitutes and going to naughty shows is never stated in the play, but it was clearly understood at the time.  s*x was a major taboo as a subject, but underneath things were at least as raunchy as today.  All of the types of lingerie they have today were invented during the Victorian era; so Victoria's Secret is that despite wearing a dress that reaches from neck to ankle underneath there's a s**y woman.

On the whole a little hypocrisy isn't such a bad thing.  If the Victorians went too far in making s*x totally impossible as a subject, today we've gone too far the other direction.  I laugh when people talk about how repressed America is in this regard.  What more can we possibly do to demonstrate we're not sexually repressed?  There is no more common topic than s*x.  It has lost all of its mystery and suspense even to little kids.  Reduced to a merely physical act of no more importance and only a little more pleasure than paying the daily tribute to the porcelain throne.

We could do with a little more Victoria's Secret--the real thing, since there's no secret in Victoria's Secret anymore.
