  1. Forensic psychiatry deals with situations like profiling a killer based on their methods or any clues they leave. They are used for repeat offenders who need "figuring out" (to put it plainly) and are also liaisons for patients who cannot care for their own mental health. You can also find examples of their work on shows like Law and Order: SVU where their psychiatrist will determine if someone is fit to stand trial.

The field is essentially a fusion of law and psychiatry.

  2. Forensic psychiatrists not only provide a profile of a prisoner's mental health/illness, they provide the parole board with recommendations about the advisability of releasing an inmate.

These medical doctors also provide medication management for incarcerated individuals who require intervention for their mental illnesses (not personality disordered). There are plenty of people within the penal system who have treatable conditions like schizophrenia or bipolar illness. The doctor also makes recommendations for whatever therapy groups may benefit the inmate.

  3. The people who help coroners and medical investigators find out what was going on in someones head after death, are forensic psychiatrists. They go through the person's life leading up to the death. Many universities that offer doctorate programs in psychiatry will offer forensic psychiatry. I have a friend who is doing her masters/doctorate program in, either Seattle or Fresno Ca. She is leaning towards the Seattle program because they offer clinical psychiatry and, after the clinical aspect, she can go on to a forensic aspect. The Ca program only offers the forensic aspect and she thinks that she would be more rounded as a psychiatrist if she has the clinical aspect too. Lots of stuff to think about.
