What exactly is a citation?

I got a citation for shoplifting $33 worth. I paid Target and paid off the court and did my probation stuff already. I just want to know if it will show up on background checks. I did the deferred ajudification (sp?) and haven't gotten into trouble since. Anyone know anything about this?

  1. 'Citation' is just a formal term for a 'ticket'..

  2. DRB nailed this one, I just need the points.....

  3. A citation is the same thing as being arrested. Its an arrest and the officer allows you to sign a ticket in lieu of a bond on the promise that you will appear in court. It's a criminal charge and it does show up on background checks unless you have your record expunged. Citations are commonly issued for nonviolent misdemeanors.

  4. airplane

  5. A citation is the "ticket" you receive for breaking the law... i.e. when an officer pulls you over for speeding... the piece of paper he gives you that has all your info and tells what you did wrong is a "citation".

If you are a minor... then the records will be sealed when you reach 18 and could only be "called upon" under certain circumstances.

If you are an adult then this will go on your permanent record (even if you satisfied all fines, fees, and punishments) unless the judge specified otherwise during your court hearing. So, yes it would show up on a background check.

Here is a link to the true definition of deferred adjudication. It does allow for the courts to expunge this from your records, but again, that is at the judge's discretion, so it really depends on what he said in court.

    Good luck and God Bless!
