In the US a social frat is generally a group of guys that party together and live together in college.  There's some hazing (yes it's true!) but most of the activity is good-natured.  It's a way to belong in college.  They have Greek letters and lots of history.  It opens doors to jobs in the future.

A service frat in the US is generally a group of people who join together for the common purpose of performing service.

An academic frat in the US is like an honor society in high school.
