What exactly is a prep?

I know I sound hecka stupid for asking this. But...everyone talks about preps. What exactly are they? Like...aren't they stuck-up people who think everyone likes them when really they hate them, and they think that they are better than everyone?

Preps are the girls who you would see in any chick flick movie.  The girly, popular girls.  Think Plastics in Mean Girls.  The ones that walk around in Abercrombie and Fitch, always have perfect hair and make up and are dating a new guy every other week.  They can be bratty and bitchy.  At least, those are how the Preps in my town are.
