What exactly is a resort hotel?

I heard about resort hotels and saw photos of them. But how are they different than regular hotels? What are they?

A resort hotel is one that is a "destination" hotel.  This means that there are many activities on hand.  In a winter resort hotel, the hotel will be on the slopes and have activiites after skiing such as pool, jacuzzi, massage, and the like.  In a warm weather resort you can expect a pool, tennis court, a spa, perhaps some golfing.  Some resorts have boats that go out during the day, etc.

"RESORT" means a specific destination, like a hotel in say, Las Vegas:  (think: The Bellagio)  you're going to Vegas, but you destination ultimately is the "resort hotel", which has ALL the amenities that you could ever possibly think of.....Different, say than a Shearton in downtown Dallas, where you're just staying at the hotel, and your main business is in the city or you're there to explore the city.....so, a resort hotel is really a destination getaway, whereas "hotels" per se, are just a place to shower, change, crash and get up and have coffee.......Resort hotels cater to your every whim.......For the price, they'd better......

Resort hotels are one with extras such as a decent pool, spa, gaming rooms in some locations, multiple restaurants, ocean side view, etc. as opposed to the standard Motel6 where you get a room and not much else.

Many resort hotels have themes, such as one at a golf resort, or one that specializes in a specific culture, like a beach themed hotel.

Many of the hotels at Disney World in Florida are theme based resort style.
