What exactly is a surrogate wife?

Question

Are these woman that use their egg and a man's sperm to make a baby for the man and his legal wife as opposed to carring baby made by legal wife's egg? The egg donor and vessel?

Or are we talking about a woman "pleasing" a man whose wife doesn't want to to it?

I've never heard of a surrogate wife; you must be thinking of a surrogate mother. What happens is that when a couple cannot conceive naturally, the woman's egg is fertilized by the man's sperm (both have been extracted from their bodies), and the result is implanted in the surrogate mother. She will carry the baby to term for the woman and man to care for later.

i believe it is a term used by Masters&Johnson to refer to a temporary partner used in their therapy sessions to treat sexual/erectile dysfunction in men (before viagra came out).

I have heard of this in the terms you described as a woman who provides pleasure for the husband when the wife is unable or unwilling. This is an above board situation where the wife is aware and condones it.

A surrogate mother is one who may donate her own egg as above or be implanted with the fertilized egg of another couple and carry and give birth to the baby.

A surrogate wife is a woman who fulfills whatever duties are required in the contract, which I suppose could be a legitimate one, but which most people refer to as a mistress.

I am researching this term because in our local paper this morning appeared an obituary for a man which stated "survived by his best friend and wife of 35 years, (name) and

his surrogate wife (name) and surrogate daughter (name).

Wow. Never heard of such a thing, but I guess these people lived openly, is probably more common than we know.

I would imagine that a surrogate wife would take on "wifely duties" since the wife would not be doing them.
