What exactly is a synopsis?

I have to write a synopsis on a mini-video. Is it just a summary?

Pretty much, yes.  But there's a big difference between a "TV Guide" listing and a "review".  

The "TV Guide" version will get you a D or an F:

(Jaws):  "A New England police chief, a marine biologist, and a wiley  fisherman struggle to combat a killer shark."

A review will get you a B:

"When a great white shark chooses the waters of a quiet New England town, a NYC transplanted police chief is forced to deal with a crisis unlike anything he's ever experienced.  After caving in to pressures by the local politicians and a young boy the same age as his sons is killed, he realizes he must face this challenge head on.  Assisted by a youthful marine biologist and a cranky but experienced fisherman, the trio heads out to kill the beast, but it proves to be a difficult and frightening task.  One by one, the strengths each man thought he could rely on are challenged and torn down, building to a final showdown between a solitary man and nature's most horrific killing machine."

A more empassionate review will get you an A.

It is basically a summary of the material. You retell the story in a brief way. Mention the main characters and tell the plot, or story. Mention the main theme of the video. As for length, it could be a paragraph but it shouldn't be longer than 3 pages. You shouldn't have a sense that you have to write a certain number of words.
