Question:

What exactly is a tip out?

I just recently got hired at a restaurant for the first time as a passer (I work expo and communication between the front and the kitchen, fairly hectic...)

Anyways, during training they mentioned the whole 'tipping-out' thing, and I'm not a server so I know I don't have to do this, but I'm not too sure what it is even still.

I'm almost certain somehow I get money from this, but I don't understand it.

I remember them mentioning something about 2.5% of net sales being the tip out. What's that mean?

  1. Tip outs are tipping all the people behind the scenes that work with you to get food out. You are the front man and get the tips. But they helped you behind the scenes and you could not make it without the hosts, cooks and bartenders.

  2. You might be in the tip out pool depending on the restaurant you work at. what it means is each server gives 2.5% of there sales at a tip to anyone on the pool. Most places this includes hosts, bussers and sometimes expos. dependingon where you work it may also just be a suggested tip not nessesaraly a mandetory tip depending on the laws in your state.

  3. I used to be a server. A tip out is when you get tips, you have to give a percentage of it to your busser, runner, and bartender if you have any of these.

It depends on where you live and the laws there for how much the percentage is. Most likely you will be required to report your tips. No one knows what you really make but you, as far as the cash tips.

What I did to keep more money in my pocket was to bus my own tables, if it is a simple (non-alcoholic) drink I could make, I would, and if I had time, I would run my own food. It also depends on how well they service you. Were your drinks out on time? Were the tables cleaned fast and well enough for the next table? Was the food the correct order and hot/cold enough?

I didn't really go by the percentage thing but by how well they worked. You didn't hear that from me though!! lol

    Hope that helps..

*the percentage is based on your total tips YOU report for your shift, not just the cash.

  4. It's what the servers need to give to the house, hostess, busser, runners, bartender, etc.
